"Las
colecciones que forman este archivo ponen de manifiesto que las normas
culturales en torno al sexo y la sexualidad están cambiando
permanentemente", explica Paul Gazzolo con motivo de la digitalización y
subida a internet de "Archives of Sexuality & Gender" de la
Biblioteca Británica de Londres. "Los investigadores pueden analizar
ámbitos como la censura, el género, la sexualidad o cualquier otro tema
extrayendo información de fuentes tan diversas como la ciencia o la
literatura".
Gazzolo
es director general de Gale, la empresa que ha llevado a cabo la digitalización
de los libros prohibidos hasta ahora: un archivo de 5.000 ejemplares
y documentos que han estado cerrados bajo siete llaves con la etiqueta de
"obscenos", una clasificación que introdujo la Biblioteca en el año
1850, justamente cuando empezaba a hacer mella el reinado de Victoria y el
(falso) puritanismo.
Los
criterios de clasificación de "obscenidad" victoriana se han
aplicado hasta finales del siglo XX incluyendo un cierto nudismo que
ahora, con los criterios actuales, se considera de lo más recatado.
El nuevo
archivo sobre sexo, sexualidad y género incluye un millón de
páginas que van desde publicaciones del siglo XVI hasta el XX. La
procedencia de este material surge de tres fuentes principales: las
adquisiciones o donaciones de la Biblioteca Británica, pionera en Europa, la
mayor parte del archivo del doctor estadounidense Alfred C. Kinsey (1894-1956),
fundador del Instituto de Investigación Sexual de la Universidad de Indiana, y
la colección de la Academia de Medicina de Nueva York.
El
material que se ha puesto al alcance de un clic, contiene temas como pautas y
vínculos entre fertilidad y practicas sexuales. La prostitución y la moral
en torno al sexo y la religión son otros de los temas que aborda el
archivo así como el surgimiento de la sexología o la sexualidad en sus ámbitos
médico y legal.
"La
Biblioteca Británica ofrece una extraordinaria base de datos en torno a las
diferentes facetas de la sexualidad humana durante los últimos siglos, desde
la lista de las trabajadoras del sexo en el barrio de Covent
Garden de Londres en el siglo XVIII hasta las argucias literarias del
marqués de Sade o los autores con seudónimo de Merryland Books", cuenta
Adrian Edwards, jefe de Patrimonio Impreso de la Biblioteca.
"Al
digitalizar este archivo y ponerlo al alcance del público en digital y en
físico -en las sedes de Londres y el condado de Yorkshire, norte de Inglaterra-
esperamos hacerlo visible y accesible como nunca ha estado antes", sentencia
Edwards.
